Former Residence of Gu Sishen

The former residence of Gu Sishen is located at No. 4, Sandao Street, Nan Guan, Longquan Town, Shenchi County. Gu Sishen (1881–1946), courtesy name Zhongyan, was a native of Longquan Town, Shenchi County. In 1904, he went to study at Meiji University in Japan, and in 1905, he assisted Sun Yat-sen in establishing the Chinese Revolutionary Alliance. During his time in Japan, he successively recruited Yan Xishan, Zhao Daiwen, Wen Shouquan, and others to join the Chinese Revolutionary Alliance. In September 1912, he traveled from Taiyuan to Beijing to invite Sun Yat-sen to visit Shanxi for an inspection. During the Anti-Japanese War, he went to Yan’an and later served as a member of the Shanxi-Suiyuan Border Region Consultative Council. He passed away in 1946 in Wei Yuan Fort, Youyu County.

The residence faces south and is situated on a north-south axis. It is 30 meters long from east to west and 32.5 meters wide from north to south, covering an area of approximately 1,000 square meters. It is a Qing Dynasty-era building in the form of a quadrangle courtyard, with surviving structures including the main house, southern wing room, western wing room, and the entrance gate. The gate is one bay wide and four rafters deep, featuring a front flush gable and rear hip-and-gable roof, with decorative bracket sets (dougong) under the eaves. There is also a screen wall inside. Gu Sishen (1881–1945), courtesy name Zhongyan, was a native of Chengguan, this county. His father, Ru Gang, once served as a Confucian instructor at Yangcheng County School in Shanxi Province.

As a child, Gu was intelligent and widely read, often able to recite texts from memory. He had a free-spirited and unrestrained personality, was good at making friends, and was known for his sincerity. Inspired by Zheng Chenggong’s legacy strategy of “overthrowing the Qing and restoring the Han,” he joined the Gelaohui (a secret society) and was elected as its leader (“Longtou”).

In the 29th year of the Guangxu reign (1903), Gu borrowed travel funds to seek out his uncle, Ru Yong. At that time, Ru Yong was serving as the supervisor of Shanxi University. Upon learning of his nephew's behavior back in their hometown and finding it incompatible with his own beliefs, he strongly criticized him.
