Baijiatan Nature Reserve

Baijiatan Nature Reserve is located in Lingwu City, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, covering a total area of 81,800 hectares. The reserve was established in 1985 with the approval of the former Lingwu County Government and was promoted to an autonomous region-level nature reserve in 1986. It is a nature reserve primarily focused on protecting desert ecosystems.

The reserve lies in the southwestern part of the Ordos Plateau, bordering the Loess Tableland to the south. Its terrain consists of hilly areas, divided into low mountain hills, gentle slope hills, and desert low mountains, with elevations ranging from 1,150 to 1,650 meters. The area preserves well-developed desert vegetation, especially the 17,000-hectare natural desert shrub community dominated by Caragana in the central core zone — the largest and most concentrated of its kind in China. In the northern core zone, there is also a 20,000-hectare natural desert grassland community dominated by Acantholimon, which is the largest of its type among existing reserves in the country.

There are 262 known species of higher plants belonging to 149 genera and 49 families within the reserve, as well as 115 known species of vertebrates from 45 families and 22 orders. Among these, 22 species are listed as national key protected wildlife, including the black stork, desert cat, Pallas's cat, goitered gazelle, and kite.
