Tianjun Stone Forest

Introduction The Tianjun Stone Forest is located on Tianjun Mountain in the western part of Tianjun County. This majestic mountain stands tall and imposing, with lush pines and cypresses and green grass covering the ground. The scenery is breathtaking and ever-changing, both above and below the mountain. On either side of the peak lie Tianjun Gully and Blind Bear Gully, where towering rock formations create a surreal landscape that is both dreamlike and real—boasting the delicate elegance of Yunnan’s Stone Forest while also featuring a more rugged and grandiose presence of abrupt peaks and jagged cliffs.

The rock formations of the Tianjun Stone Forest share the same geological structure as those of Yunnan’s Stone Forest, both being spectacular creations of karst landforms. They were formed approximately 350 million years ago during the Carboniferous period. The difference lies in the fact that during their formation, the Tianjun Stone Forest experienced drought and water scarcity caused by the uplift of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. As a result, the water erosion process was not completed. Instead, after prolonged wind erosion, it developed into the unique landscape we see today.
