Fen Yuan Water Conservancy Scenic Area is a national water conservancy scenic area.

Fen Yuan is located at the eastern foot of Guancen Mountain, a famous mountain in North China, within Dongzhai Town, 30 km southwest of Ningwu Pass—one of the three renowned strategic passes in China and known as the “Key to Northern Shanxi.” It is the source of the Fen River, the largest tributary of the Yellow River and the mother river of Shanxi. The scenic area spans approximately 100 km². The area boasts picturesque landscapes and splendid cultural attractions, and has long been honored as the “Foremost Scenic Wonder of Shanxi.” Emperor Yang of Sui, an avid lover of mountain tours and leisure, left behind the ruins of his hunting and summer palace complex here.

The “Spiritual Pool of Fen Yuan” offers sweet, refreshing water that nourishes the land of Shanxi. Nearly one million acres of pristine secondary forest are lush and green, teeming with rare birds and animals that add boundless vitality. The magical Ten Thousand Year Ice Cave is considered a masterpiece among global wonders. The cliffside plank roads built during the Tang Dynasty are thrillingly perilous, and more than ten alpine lakes form a high-mountain lake cluster, like mirrors inlaid on the summits two thousand meters above sea level. In the Malun Grassland—the largest subalpine meadow in North China—“the sky is vast, the wilderness boundless, and the wind blows the grass low to reveal cattle and sheep.” The elegant and romantic Lovers’ Valley resembles a heavenly paradise. The rare Stone Gate Suspended Coffins in the north leave behind eternal mysteries. The steep Mount Luya encompasses the wonders of the world. Together, these magnificent scenes form the Fen Yuan Scenic Area—a radiant pearl on the land of Shanxi.　

Dongzhai Town: A town under the jurisdiction of Ningwu County. Established as Dongzhai Commune in 1958 and upgraded to a town in 1984. Located in the central-western part of the county, 30 km from the county seat. Covers an area of 184 km² with a population of 12,000. Accessible by road.
