Former Site of the Fenghuo Machinery Factory

The former site of the Fenghuo Machinery Factory is located in Yaogou Village, Yanjiaya Village, Tan yaogou Village, and Sheke Village, Dongzhai Town, Ningwu County. It stretches approximately 5 li in length, surrounded by dense vegetation and hidden within high mountains. There are currently 90 remaining houses, 8 factory foundations, 2 office buildings, 1 workshop, 1 transformer room, and 1 fire garage. This factory was a wartime munitions plant, codenamed Factory 287, and was one of the three military factories in Ningwu at the time — the other two being the Changcheng (Great Wall) and Hengguang factories. Established in 1966, it was primarily responsible for the initial processing of steel cannons, which were then sent to the Changcheng Machinery Factory for final assembly. The Fenghuo Machinery Factory was divided into six production zones and one residential area. Zone One, located in Yanjiaya Village, housed the foundry and die-casting workshop; Zone Two, in Dengjiagou, was for wood processing; Zone Three, in Wayaohao, handled hot processing; Zone Four, in Huojian gou, produced molds; Zone Five, in Shigou, focused on iron forging; and Zone Six, in Ban ya, was the tool workshop. The factory had a total of around 3,000 workers, with the “Third Front” builders coming from places such as Beijing, the northeast, and Hebei. The factory was evacuated in 1979.
