Ninghua Ten Thousand Buddhas Cave

Ninghua Ten Thousand Buddhas Cave is located on the western side of Ninghua Village, Huabei Tun Township, Ningwu County, on the Ningyue Mountain, approximately 1,000 meters above sea level. The cave faces east. It was carved during the 19th year of the Wanli reign of the Ming Dynasty (1591) and underwent renovation between the 10th year of the Tongzhi reign (1871) and the 6th year of the Guangxu reign (1880) of the Qing Dynasty. The existing grottoes date back to the Ming Dynasty. Built against the mountain, the cave was hewn directly from the cliff, featuring monk quarters and steps in front. The entrance of the Ten Thousand Buddhas Cave is inscribed with three large regular script characters reading “Ten Thousand Buddhas Cave,” each about 80 cm in diameter, inscribed by Wang Chonggu, Minister of War of the Hezhong Wang family. The cave entrance is 2.7 meters high and 2.85 meters wide. Inside, the cave is square-shaped, with a width, depth, and height of 10 meters each. The floor is paved with square flagstones approximately 50 cm across, arranged diagonally. There are two towering pillars inside the cave. The ceiling is flat, with an eight-trigram colored caisson decorated in the center — the characters are gilded and framed with lotus patterns. The rest of the ceiling is covered with 24 imitation wooden panels. One inscription on the ceiling reads: “Completed in the 2nd day of the 8th month of the 19th year of the Wanli reign of the Great Ming”; another reads: “Renovated in the 6th year of the Guangxu reign of the Great Qing.” Murals adorn the three cave walls.
