Dongzhai Cliff Carvings

The Dongzhai Cliff Carvings are a cultural relic protection unit of Ningwu County.

The Dongzhai Cliff Carvings are located on the rocky cliffs west of Leiming Temple on Louzishan Mountain in Dongzhai Village, Dongzhai Town, Ningwu County. They were created in the sixth year of Yuanyou during the Song and Yuan dynasties (1091). The carvings are rectangular, approximately 1.1 meters long and 0.8 meters wide, and bear inscriptions such as “Reconstruction of Leidao Chan Temple,” “The sixth year of Yuanyou, autumn, seventh month, mouth si,” and “Constructed by Zhang ?biao.”

The inscriptions record the scene of various Song dynasty military and political officials visiting the source of the Fen River, drinking wine, and enjoying music, as well as listing the names of those who accompanied them. The characters are in regular script, measuring about 0.2 to 0.3 meters in size. Other characters have become illegible. In 1985, the People’s Government of Ningwu County designated them as a county-level cultural relic protection unit.
