Jiaocheng Mountain is a national-level forest park.

Jiaocheng Mountain National Forest Park is located at the eastern foot of the Lüliang Mountains, approximately 56 kilometers from the provincial capital Taiyuan, making it extremely convenient to reach. The park covers a total area of 187,000 hectares, featuring beautiful natural landscapes and abundant flora and fauna. It boasts precious tree species such as the Oriental Arborvitae forest, distinctive arbor forests, and ornamental woodlands. Dozens of rare animal species inhabit the area, including the globally endangered brown eared pheasant, migratory birds, wild deer, musk deer, golden eagles, and more. Nestled within the deep mountains and secluded valleys is the thousand-year-old Xuanzhong Temple, the ancestral temple of Japan’s Pure Land Buddhism and True Pure Land Buddhism sects. It exudes the poetic charm of “a winding path leading to a secluded spot, with a meditation room surrounded by flowers and trees.” The Great Buddha’s Hall in the temple houses over 30,000 volumes of Buddhist scriptures, making it a precious repository for Buddhist cultural and educational resources both in China and abroad. Guashan Tianning Temple, named for its peaks that resemble the Eight Trigrams, is covered with ancient, robust pine and cypress trees that remain green all year round, and is steeped in many mysterious and enchanting local legends. The exquisitely crafted Great Buddha’s Hall hangs at the mountain’s summit, complemented by a cast iron stele, the Kunlu Pavilion, and rare Tang-era locust trees, all of which add boundless charm to Guashan Tianning Temple. It is regarded by Taoists as a natural sacred site, rich in cultural heritage. The Longtang Temple, a rare sight in northern China, features a natural karst cave with grotesque rocks in countless shapes. The ancient Yuan Dynasty architecture of Yongfu Temple is quaint and evocative. In Wayao Gully, the 30-meter-high stratified sandstone cliffs and cascading streams create a serene atmosphere with murmuring waters and moonlit pools, adding vitality to the park.
