Green County Museum

The Green County Museum, also known as the Hani Ethnic Museum, is currently the world’s only museum dedicated to the Hani people. It is located within the Dongyang Ethnic Culture Park in the Ludong New District. The museum was first established in May 2006 and officially opened to the public during the International Hani/Akha Academic Symposium in November 2008. On January 30, 2011, it was approved for establishment by the Yunnan Provincial Cultural Relics Bureau and officially inaugurated on February 3. Since its opening, it has received over 80,000 domestic and international visitors (it is now also a scenic spot for Kunming International Travel Agency).

The museum covers a total area of 6,500 square meters (including the culture park square in front of the museum and totem poles representing the six ethnic groups native to Green County). The project invested over 12 million yuan (including 2 million yuan from the Central Civilization Office’s cultural projects and 10 million yuan raised locally). The building itself has a construction area of 3,456 square meters, with an exhibition area of 2,200 square meters. The museum consists of 12 exhibition halls: the General Hall, Migration Hall, Religion Hall, Customs Hall, Farming Hall, Costume Hall, Goddess Hall, Art & Culture Hall, Library & Archives Hall, Tea Culture Hall, Multimedia Hall, and Artworks Exhibition Hall. It houses a collection of 2,995 precious cultural heritage items (sets) related to the production, daily life, religion, textiles, costumes, and books of the Hani people around the world.

The museum incorporates contemporary advanced theories by combining regional characteristics with the overall culture of the Hani/Akha globally, as well as merging traditional indigenous culture with modern techniques. It utilizes multimedia technologies along with various physical exhibits to comprehensively and multi-dimensionally collect, preserve, and showcase the production, daily life customs, and primitive religious beliefs of the Hani people worldwide. In addition, through video screenings, exhibitions, and other activities, the museum fulfills its role in cultural preservation and inheritance. As a result, it has become the world’s most comprehensive and extensive resource center for the rescue, protection, research, and development of Hani traditional culture, as well as a hub for studying Hani cultural heritage.
