The Shiping section was opened to traffic in October 1936, converted to standard gauge in 1970, and passenger services were discontinued in 2005, although freight operations continued.

Over the past nearly hundred years, the Gejiu–Shiping–Luliang Railway has played an indelible role in the economic and social development of southern Yunnan and even the entire province. Today, Shiping Station remains a key cargo hub in the region, continuing to contribute actively to economic development. Moreover, Shiping Station is a well-preserved French-style railway station on the Gejiu–Shiping–Luliang line. The line extends from Bisezhai to Gejiu, then from Jijie at the midpoint between the two towns, to Jianshui and Shiping.

Construction of the Gejiu–Shiping–Luliang Railway began in May 1915 and the entire line was not opened until October 10, 1936. Perhaps the longest-built railway in China’s history, it fulfilled the railway dream of a group of tough and determined Chinese industrialists and businessmen.
