The Former Site of the Eighth Route Army Front Headquarters in Nan Hui (also the former site of the CPC Central Committee’s Northern Bureau) is situated under the central large locust tree in Nan Hui Village, Matai Town, Zuoquan County, Jinzhong City. Due to changes in the war situation, in November 1940, the Eighth Route Army Headquarters moved to Wu Junsì. By the end of the year, due to Japanese “mopping-up” operations, Wu Junsì was burned down by the Japanese army. The Eighth Route Army Front Headquarters and the CPC Central Committee’s Northern Bureau then relocated to Nan Hui Village. During their nearly one-year stay in Nan Hui, revolutionary veterans such as Peng Dehuai, Deng Xiaoping, and Zuo Quan fought, worked, and studied here, leading the Eighth Route Army in launching powerful military and political offensives through struggles against “nibbling” and “mopping-up” campaigns, thoroughly thwarting the enemy’s schemes.
The Former Site of the Eighth Route Army Front Headquarters in Nan Hui (also the former site of the CPC Central Committee’s Northern Bureau) covers an area of 860 square meters, including five courtyards: the former residence courtyard of Peng Dehuai, the office courtyard of Chief of Staff Zuo Quan, the former residence courtyard of Jia Huolin, the former residence of Gong Jingting, and the stable courtyard.
The Former Site of the Eighth Route Army Front Headquarters in Nan Hui is a historical testament to the Chinese Communist Party leading the Eighth Route Army in its courageous resistance against Japanese invaders during the War of Resistance Against Japan. It holds an important place in the history of China’s war effort and is of significant importance for the study of the revolutionary history of the Chinese Communist Party.
