The living environment of the Dai villages is tranquil, with neatly and regularly arranged houses. Regardless of the village size or the number of households (ranging from one or two hundred to just ten or twenty), there are always large rivers, streams, or lakes and fish ponds nearby. The houses within the village are aligned in an orderly fashion, nestled among green trees and bamboo. The village paths are wide and flat, and in villages with temples, bodhi trees are usually planted nearby. The residences are surrounded by bamboo or wooden fences, within which fruit trees, flowers, or firewood forests (often consisting of heartleaf ebony trees) are planted. Below the bamboo houses lies an open space known as the courtyard. Stepping into a Dai village, you will see swaying coconut trees, tall betel palms, slender bamboo swaying gracefully, and bananas rustling their huge green leaves. Streams trickle through the village, with a riot of blooming flowers and birds singing in chorus, creating a captivating tropical mountain painting — a beautiful borderland poem that is truly enchanting.
