Nanjing Mountain Wenbi Pagoda

Nanjing Mountain Wenbi Pagoda, located on Nanjing Mountain in Wenhua Village, Wenjing Town, Jingdong Yi Autonomous County, is a square, densely spaced, nine-story hollow brick pagoda built during the Kangxi era of the Qing Dynasty (1662–1722), also known as the Wenbi Pagoda. The pagoda stands 21 meters tall with a base width of 6.9 meters. The northern side of the ground floor has an entrance, and the pagoda’s body tapers upward by level. Each level features a central Buddha niche, and the nine eaves are cantilevered from the pagoda body using corbeling techniques. The eaves curve inward in an arc, with dentil moldings beneath them, giving it a style reminiscent of the Small Wild Goose Pagoda in Xi'an.

This pagoda originally had a Qing Dynasty Kangxi-era stone stele documenting its construction. The pagoda is well-preserved and holds historical and artistic value. Having withstood centuries of weathering and several earthquakes, it still stands proudly. In August 1986, it was designated as a county-level cultural relics protection unit by the People's Government of Jingdong County.

There are two legendary reasons for building Nanjing Mountain Wenbi Pagoda: First, the Nanjing Mountain range was extending directly toward the center of the Chuan River, gradually appearing as if it might connect with the Wenban Mountain range on the west bank. There were concerns that if the two mountain ranges linked, they would block the Chuan River, bringing disasters to the Wenjing area. The pagoda was built to suppress the mountain range and prevent it from extending further into the river. Second, legend has it that during the Yuan Dynasty, the Wenhua area lacked scholars and talent. The pagoda was constructed to invigorate literary culture and foster a thriving intellectual environment in the region.
