Ruins of the Jingdong Wei City

The ruins of the Jingdong Wei City are a Yunnan Provincial cultural relics protection unit.

The ruins of the Jingdong Wei City are located at Jingdong No. 1 Middle School in Jingdong County, Yunnan Province.

It is a provincial-level key cultural relics protection unit and one of only four remaining Ming Dynasty Wei City ruins in Yunnan Province. Currently, only fragmented sections of the city wall and the southern gate remain. Originally, there were four gates—east, south, west, and north. The well-preserved structures today include the southern gate fortress and remnants of the southern wall, dating back over 600 years.

Historical Records

According to historical accounts, the Wei City was built in the 23rd year of the Hongwu reign during the Ming Dynasty. The city wall was constructed along the mountain, with a perimeter of 5,000 meters. At that time, it was the former residence of E’ Tao, the hereditary Tusi (native chieftain) of the Dai people in Jingdong. In the 18th year of the Hongwu reign, the Luchuan Tusi Si Lunfa rebelled and launched an attack on Jingdong. After E’ Tao was defeated and fled to Midu in Dali, he requested the Ming army’s ShenCe Wei (Imperial Guard) to protect Jingdong. E’ Tao offered his residence to station troops, hence the name “Wei City.”
