Horse-Tethering Stone at Kuanzhai Alley
The horse-tethering stone can be considered a relief wall within Kuanzhai Alley. This is the stone where the Eight Banners nobility used to tether their horses in the past. It has been preserved to this day and bears witness to the history of the Qing army’s advance on Chengdu over 300 years ago. Now adorned with modern paintings, it has become even more engaging and vivid.
The large stone is square-shaped, approximately 4 meters high, over 10 meters in circumference, and has well-defined edges. On the southwest edge, there is a diagonal, through-drilled round hole. Legend has it that this was carved during the late Song Dynasty when Liu Yuan built a stronghold on Tianzhu Mountain to resist the Yuan forces, creating the hole to tether horses. Today, with the construction of the Liandan Lake, the stone is submerged underwater.
