The new building of the Sichuan Provincial Library is located at the northeast corner where Renmin West Road meets Xihua Gate Street in Qingyang District, Chengdu. Construction officially began in 2009. Covering an area of 17 acres, the new library has a construction area of approximately 52,000 square meters—more than three times that of the current old library. Once completed and opened to the public, it will become the largest library in Southwest China. The new library building features a simple and modern architectural style, and its overall shape resembles the gate towers of palaces from the Han Dynasty, hinting at the historical legacy of the land of Sichuan. This design choice also stems from the new library’s location near the site of the former Chengdu Imperial City. The building stands 38 meters tall, with its exterior finished in a light beige color. Together with the overall architectural form, it presents the image of a city library that is both modern and rich in historical charm.

After its completion in 2014, the new provincial library can house over 5 million volumes of books. It integrates collection organization and traditional services, digital services, and remote services, and will become the largest public literature and information base, data center, regional literature network center, thematic literature research center, and center for mass cultural and educational activities in Western China. The new library will feature reading areas for people with disabilities and for children, and will regularly host public lectures. Citizens can apply for a library card to borrow books for free and access literature.

Opening Hours:

Before April 23, 2016, the library was in a trial operation phase, open from 9:00 to 17:00. It is closed every Monday.
