Aidao Temple

Aidao Temple is located on Tongshunqiao Street in Chengdu, covering an area of nearly 10 acres. Originally known as Yuanjue Nunnery, it was first built during the Ming Dynasty on the banks of the ancient Beigong Canal near Tongshun Bridge, boasting a history of over 500 years. In the early years of the Republic of China, the ancient Yuanjue Nunnery was renamed Shifang Aidao Nianfo Hall (abbreviated as Aidao Temple).

Its main buildings are designed in the imperial architectural style of southern China during the Ming and Qing dynasties, while the auxiliary halls and wing rooms are built in the architectural style of the late Qing and early Republican periods in southern China. The design highlights the features of “balancing strength with grace, exuding both grandeur and beauty.” The temple’s mountain gate is uniquely styled—tall and majestic, arguably the grandest among temples in western China. Inside is the “Heavenly King Hall,” where the Maitreya Buddha sits centrally, smiling to welcome guests from all directions; the statues of the Four Heavenly Kings stand on either side, safeguarding the Dharma. The main hall of Aidao Temple is the “Mahavira Hall,” a two-story building with a hip-and-gable roof, solemn and imposing. The hall enshrines a statue of Sakyamuni Buddha, and at the back of the hall stands a bronze statue of the Medicine Buddha. On the east and west sides are exquisite silk paintings of the Twelve Enlightened Beings. To the west of the temple lies the Guanyin Hall, which houses a magnificent purple copper statue of Guanyin seated in the center. The dignified visage and smooth lines of the statue make it one of the finest Guanyin sculptures in China.
