Upper翔 Church (St. John’s Church)

Upper翔 Church (St. John’s Church) is a Sichuan Provincial Cultural Heritage Site.

Originally named St. John’s Church, Upper翔 Church in Chengdu, Sichuan Province was renamed to its current name in 1992. It is located at No. 219 Shuncheng Street, Qingyang District, and is one of the largest churches in Chengdu and also one of the largest in Southwest China.

Originally named St. John’s Church, Chengdu’s Upper翔 Church is located at No. 219 Shuncheng Street (No. 20 Upper翔 Street), Qingyang District. It is one of the largest churches in Chengdu and also one of the largest in Southwest China. Established in 1909, it served as the cathedral for the Western Sichuan suburban diocese of the Church of England in China. In 1912, the “Fu Ren Academy” was founded here to promote Western learning. On July 27, 1941, the church was bombed by Japanese aircraft, and plans to rebuild it in 1946 did not come to fruition. After repairs, services resumed until the founding of New China. On March 2, 1980, following the implementation of the policy on freedom of religious belief, it became one of the first key religious activity sites reopened nationwide. In March 1992, due to urban redevelopment on Shuncheng Street, it was renamed to its current title.
