Zhimala Palace

Zhimala Palace is a cultural relic protection unit of Sichuan Province.

Zhimala Palace is located in Luoxu Town, Shiqu County, and is a typical Tibetan Buddhist monastery — in fact, it is a local Guanyin (Goddess of Mercy) temple. Though not large in size, it has a long history. There is also a fascinating legend about its founding: the original Zhimala Palace was situated on a mountain not far from the current site across the way. Later, during a flash flood, it was swept downstream, but the statue of Guanyin was not — it was miraculously moved to the current location. After the flood receded, people rebuilt the present Zhimala Palace on this spot. This reconstructed monastery has now stood for over 300 years. The statue of Guanyin enshrined inside, along with the Tara (a female bodhisattva) brought by Princess Wencheng when she entered Tibet — both treasured by the monks here as the “treasures that guard the temple” — date back 1,300 years.

Protected area: The distribution area of the stone carvings extends 50 meters eastward, 60 meters southward, and 10 meters westward and northward.

Construction control zone: A buffer of 5 meters beyond the protected area.

Luoxu Town: Luoxu Town is a town under the jurisdiction of Shiqu County, Garzê Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province. In 1958, Luoxu Township was established; in 1974, it was restructured as a commune; in 1983, it reverted to township status; and in 1992, it was upgraded to a town.

Luoxu Town is located in the southern part of the county, 75 kilometers from the county seat. It covers an area of 428.7 square kilometers and has a population of approximately 0.3 million. It administers eight village committees: Luoxu Long, Wenduo, Lakong Long, Danda, Longxikha, Nazha, Ebanai, and Gengsha, as well as one residential committee for Luoxu Town.
