Grand Canyon Geological Park

A new candidate site for a canyon geological park has recently been discovered in the Jinkouhe area of Leshan City, Sichuan Province, located in the lower reaches of the Dadu River. The canyon stretches 14 km in length, with a maximum depth of over 2,600 m, exposing a massive and well-preserved geological section from the pre-Sinian Ebian Group to the Permian Emeishan Basalt. Like an enormous tome, it records over a billion years of geological evolution. The canyon walls rise sheer and towering, with rocks in fantastical and dreamlike shapes. Above the canyon lies a dramatic plateau, majestic in scale. Nearby, the area features a wealth of high-quality geological sites, including the continental volcanic landforms of Dawashan Mountain, the glacial relics of Shoupingshan Mountain, the karst caves of Longtangshan Mountain, and the paleontological fossil remains of Yangxin limestone.

In addition, there is the pristine forest of Dawashan–Shoupingshan, rich in rare flora and fauna and largely untouched by humans, preserving an original ecological environment. Coupled with cultural elements such as the Chengdu–Kunming Railway, the “Fulin Culture” relics, the Leshui Highway, and the traditions of the Yi ethnic group, this geological park combines canyon landforms, stratigraphic paleontology, dramatic peaks, rushing rivers, historical sites, and rare wildlife into a high-quality, premium-level tourism resource cluster. Currently, the Sichuan Geological Parks and Geological Relics Survey and Evaluation Center under the Sichuan Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources is actively conducting surveys, evaluations, and application work for the park.
