The Nan Nieshui Stone Carvings are located in Nan Nieshui Village, Niusi Township, Qinxian County. They represent a significant large-scale Buddhist stone carving hoard discovered in modern times and are named after the village where they were unearthed. The earliest dated carving is from the third year of Yongping during the Northern Wei Dynasty (510 AD), and the latest from the ninth year of Tian Sheng during the Northern Song Dynasty (1031 AD). The collection includes exquisitely crafted Buddhist stone carvings from the Northern Wei, Eastern Wei, Northern Qi, Sui, Tang, and Northern Song periods, mainly in four forms: pagoda-shaped carvings, individual statues, carved steles, and stone tablets.

Pagoda-shaped carvings refer to square stone blocks with Buddha niches carved on all four sides, stacked to form a tower shape—an extremely rare form in China. There are currently 53 surviving pagoda-shaped carvings, assembled from 389 carved stone blocks, with each block featuring niches on all four sides primarily depicting Buddhas and Bodhisattvas as the main figures. The niches are adorned with carvings of architecture, drapery, flying Apsaras, acrobatics, birds and beasts, flowers, and trees, presenting a rich variety of content and vividly lifelike imagery. There are 1,161 individual statues, mostly of Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Arhats, and disciples. Some are damaged, but their overall forms remain well-preserved. Carved steles are relatively few among the Nan Nieshui Stone Carvings and feature unique styles. Stone tablets are also limited in number, mostly recording historical facts, though due to age, most inscriptions have become blurred and show signs of weathering and erosion.

The Nan Nieshui Stone Carvings reflect the long history of Buddhism in the region and provide a wealth of physical materials for studying Buddhist art, ancient architecture, calligraphy, and other aspects, holding significant archaeological and cultural value.

In May 2013, the Nan Nieshui Stone Carvings were designated as part of the seventh batch of National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units.
