The Monument to the Vanguard in Defense of Chairman Mao is located on Bifeng Mountain south of Qinxian County. After the victory of the War of Resistance Against Japan, the reactionary forces initiated a nationwide civil war and launched a frenzied attack on Yan'an, where the Party Central Committee was based. At this critical juncture, the Party Central Committee designated Qinxian County from the old Taiyue revolutionary base to select a group of outstanding liberated youth to reinforce the Central Guard Regiment. To defend the Party Central Committee, defend Chairman Mao, defend the liberated areas, and safeguard the fruits of liberation, the people of Qinxian County, who had been liberated under the leadership of the Party, launched a wave of “Mass Enlistment on the Second Day of the Second Month” in 1947. Within just a few days, out of Qinxian County’s population of 120,000, 5,000 brave men volunteered, and 3,500 outstanding youths formed the “Vanguard in Defense of Chairman Mao,” proudly enlisting in the army. From among them, 250 elite individuals were selected to go to northern Shaanxi, where they directly undertook the glorious mission of defending Chairman Mao and the Party Central Committee.
