Former Site of the Nanxi Peasant Uprising
The Former Site of the Nanxi Peasant Uprising is mainly located in Lipu Town, Muping Town, and Songjia Township of Cuiping District, Yibin City. In Man dongwan Village, Anshi Village, Lipu Town, situated about 1 kilometer north of the Yibin–Changning Highway and 7.5 kilometers from Lipu Town, the site features a wooden-framed structure with small blue-tiled roofing, covering an area of approximately 150 square meters, and is now used as residential housing. The former site of the celebration venue for the peasant uprising is located within the Muping Town farmers’ market. It is a two-story wooden-framed building with blue tiles, about 40 kilometers from the urban area of Cuiping District, Yibin City, and 18 kilometers from Changning County. The former site of the Songjia Militia garrison is located in the center of the old town area of Songjia Town. It is a small blue-tiled wooden-framed structure, with about 50 square meters still preserved, currently serving as civilian housing. It lies approximately 35 kilometers from Yibin City and 25 kilometers from Changning County.
On April 7, 1928, over 1,000 peasants led by the Nanxi County Committee of the Communist Party of China launched an armed uprising in Muping. Zeng Junjie, a member of the Special Committee of Southern Sichuan, served as the overall commander of the uprising. Peasants from Lipu, Songjia, and other areas also rose up in succession to join the effort. Over 5,000 peasant fighters, holding high the banner of the “Southern Sichuan Workers’ and Peasants’ Revolutionary Army,” confiscated weapons from local landlords and suppressed local militia leaders. On April 10, the rebel peasants held a celebration assembly in Muping. According to the uprising plan set earlier in the year by the Special Committee of Southern Sichuan, after the success of the Nanxi Peasant Uprising, they were to advance along the river to rendezvous with the Yibin peasant army and capture Yibin County. Zheng Zelong, head of the Yibin Party organization, also participated in leading the uprising command. However, due to the prior assassination of another key leader of the Yibin County Committee by the enemy, the entire uprising plan was disrupted. The Yibin garrison dispatched two battalions to besiege Muping, then split forces to suppress Songjia and Lipu. After seven days of stalemate, the uprising failed, and more than 100 rebels were killed. Key leaders such as Zeng Junjie, Hu Mingxin, and Zeng Wenzhao were executed heroically one after another. Following the failure of the uprising, Party organizations in Yibin, Jiang’an, Changning, and Gaoxian actively arranged for the evacuation and concealment of uprising participants.
The Nanxi Peasant Uprising was the first peasant revolt initiated and led by the Sichuan Party organization after implementing the spirit of the August 7th Meeting of the CPC. It thus marked the first peasant uprising in Sichuan following the August 7th Meeting.
