Dama Cave is situated in a bamboo grove on a small hillside beside the road in Xianfeng Village, Changning Town, Changning County, about 4 kilometers from the county seat. Before the founding of the People's Republic of China, it was a post station on the ancient Tea-Horse Road that connected Changning to Yunnan.

In July 1927, underground Chinese Communist Party members Yuan Dunhou, Wang Zejia, and Huang Min held a meeting at this post station and secretly established the first CCP organization in Changning — the Dama Cave Branch of the CCP Changning County Committee. Yuan Dunhou served as the branch secretary, with Wang Zejia and Huang Min as committee members. After its establishment, the Dama Cave Branch set up peasant associations in the areas of Jingjiang Township and Anningqiao (now Changning Town), recruiting over 1,000 members and forming a peasant militia of more than 30 people. In April 1928, the branch was ordered to lead 28 members of the peasant militia from Meibai Township and Xincun Township of Changning to participate in the Naxi Peasant Uprising. After the failure of the Naxi Uprising in August 1928, Yuan Dunhou and Wang Zejia, among others, organized the Independent Regiment of the Workers’ and Peasants’ Revolutionary Army in Dabangshan, Taiping Township, Changning County (renamed in 1929 as the Fourth Route Guerrilla Unit of the Sichuan Red Army, with Yuan Dunhou in charge of political work and Wang Zejia as the regiment commander). Yuan Dunhou and Wang Zejia were both killed in action during a breakout battle on Lingxiao Mountain on June 7, 1930.

The current buildings at Dama Cave are several renovated brick-and-wood tiled houses, which are now quite dilapidated.
