Former Residence of Yang Hansheng

The former residence of Yang Hansheng is a Sichuan Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Unit and a patriotic education base.

The former residence of Yang Hansheng is located on Nanhua Street in Luochang Town, Gao County. Built during the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty, it has a history of over 200 years. The residence is designed in a traditional three-courtyard layout, facing south with its back to the north, and consists of the main house, courtyard, and backyard garden, covering a total area of 1,163 square meters. The main building has a construction area of approximately 319 square meters. The main house features a flush-gable roof with clay tiles and a post-and-lintel structure, spanning three bays (12.5 meters) in width and two bays (7.3 meters) in depth, with a central hall and four bedrooms on either side. The entrance gate is a double-leaf four-panel lattice door, representing a typical residential style of southern Sichuan. The residence has been well-preserved, retaining 11 rooms once used by Yang Hansheng during his lifetime, including his living quarters, main hall, and study.

In 2001, it was designated as a County-level Cultural Relics Protection Unit by the People’s Government of Gao County; in 2002, it was recognized as a Provincial-level Cultural Relics Protection Unit by the People’s Government of Sichuan Province. In 2003, it was established as a Municipal Patriotic Education Base.

Protected Area: To the west, up to the rear wall of Luochang Town Central Primary School; to the east, up to Luochang Town Central Hospital (with the boundary defined by the passageway adjacent to the street); to the north, up to the existing wall of the backyard; to the south, up to the gate of Luochang Town Central Primary School with the boundary defined by the adjacent street wall.

Yang Hansheng (1902–1993)

Originally named Ouyang Benyi, with pen names Yang Jianshu and Huahan. A native of Gao County, Sichuan Province. Member of the Communist Party of China. Graduated from Shanghai University in 1925. Participated in the May Thirtieth Movement. Served as the Party Branch Secretary of Shanghai University, Secretary of the Zhabei District Committee of the CPC, secretary at Whampoa Military Academy, and secretary of the Political Department of the National Revolutionary Army. In 1927, he took part in the Nanchang Uprising as the secretary of the political department of a certain army. Joined the Creation Society in 1928, where he was responsible for secretarial work related to the League of Left-Wing Writers and the General Federation of Literary and Art Circles.
