Shimen Stone Carvings in Gao County

The Shimen Stone Carvings are located in Qingfu Town, Gao County. They are distributed across a massive cliff wall that is 10 meters long, 2.5 meters wide, and 4 meters above the ground. The carvings are arranged horizontally from left to right, consisting of a total of 12 niches with approximately 1,200 characters in all.

Most of the legible inscriptions are elegant verses composed by literati from the Ming and Qing dynasties, praising the perilous nature of Shimen. The content of the carvings fully illustrates how the ancient Shimen Road, due to its rugged and steep terrain, became an important military pass, playing a significant role in the local economic development and military events.
