Xigou Scenic Area

Xigou Scenic Area is located in Shijiabao Township, Songpan County, Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, over 90 kilometers from Songpan County and 35 kilometers from Huanglong Scenic Area. The Xigou Valley stretches approximately 30 kilometers in length, covering a total area of about 120 square kilometers. It experiences distinct seasons with a mild and humid climate. The valley features an elevation drop of up to 3,838 meters, abundant sunshine, and rich vegetation of primeval forests. It is home to many globally endangered species of wildlife such as the giant panda, Sichuan golden snub-nosed monkey, takin, and blue sheep. Due to the abundance of primeval forests and various precious plant species, the area has extremely high levels of negative oxygen ions, reaching up to 100,000–150,000 per square meter. The landforms of Xigou were formed 120 million years ago during ancient orogenic movements and are remnants of ancient oceans, resulting in uniquely diverse, naturally carved, and spectacular landscapes. Bizarre light and shadow effects and rugged rocks can be seen throughout the valley.

Location: Situated in Shijiabao Township, Songpan County, Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, at 33°N latitude and 104°E longitude, it is over 90 kilometers from Songpan County and 35 kilometers from Huanglong Scenic Area. Xigou starts from the valley entrance in Shuanghe Village, Shijiabao Township, Songpan County, and extends all the way to the foot of Snow Mountain Mount Minya Konka (Xuebao Ding), spanning approximately 30 kilometers in length.

Climate Features: Located in the transitional zone between the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the Sichuan Basin, it features distinct seasons and a mild, humid climate.

Shijiabao Township: A township under the jurisdiction of Songpan County. Established in 1951 as Shijiabao Township, it was placed under Pingwu County in 1959 before being returned to Songpan County. Renamed Shuanghe Township in 1963, converted to a commune in 1974, reinstated as Shijiabao Commune in 1981, and restored as Shijiabao Township in 1984. It is located in the eastern part of the county, 44 kilometers from the county seat, covering an area of 419.5 square kilometers with a population of 2,000.
