The Liu Clan Ancestral Hall in Shuwei

The Liu Clan Ancestral Hall in Shuwei is a cultural relic protection unit of Sichuan Province.

The Liu Clan Ancestral Hall is located in Mingtangwan, Fanshan Village, Group 4, Shuwei Town, Xuyong County, about 100 meters east of Dashui Road. The ancestral hall faces east and is backed by west, consisting of a mountain gate and residential buildings arranged in a courtyard layout. It spans 50 meters in width and 46 meters in depth. It was built as a place of worship for the Liu family who migrated to Sichuan during the "Huguang Filling Sichuan" period. Currently, there are six courtyards, one mountain gate, and nine residential buildings remaining. The mountain gate features two pillars and a double-eave hip-and-gable roof with two bays, with deeply carved bas-reliefs depicting historical scenes under the eaves, along with colored paintings. Two complete stone pillars are inscribed with a couplet: “Our illustrious ancestors, descendants of Emperor Yao, embodied the great harmony to unite our nine clans; the solemn ancestral temple shelters generations to come—none dare not mourn the revered forebears.” The residential buildings showcase architectural features typical of southern Sichuan, such as wooden panel walls, lattice windows, and hanging palace lanterns under the eaves, all well preserved. In 1994, it was designated as a county-level cultural relic protection unit. The Liu Clan Ancestral Hall is a family shrine that is well preserved, large in scale, and exquisitely carved, holding significant preservation value. Our bureau has organized relevant experts to conduct on-site inspections and evaluations in Xuyong County, and all agreed that it possesses high historical, artistic, and scientific value, and is in excellent condition of preservation. In 2010, the Liu Clan Ancestral Hall in Shuwei was listed as a municipal-level cultural relic protection unit by the Luzhou Municipal People’s Government. On July 16, 2012, it was designated as part of the eighth batch of Sichuan Provincial Cultural Relic Protection Units.

Shuwei Town: A town under the jurisdiction of Xuyong County. Established as Shuwei Township in 1948, upgraded to a commune in 1958, and became a town in 1987. It is located in the northeastern part of the county, 44 kilometers from the county seat. Covering an area of 235 square kilometers with a population of 25,000, it lies along the eastern route of the Sichuan-Yunnan Highway. The town administers 21 village committees including Gangtie, Micheng, Yueming, Xima, Chuanxin, Shuixing, Huilong, Baowei, Anquan, Xingdian, Dayan, Fanshan, Doudi, Linfeng, Dunzi, Baihe, Qinggang, Guandou, Tianying, Fenlong, and Xixi, as well as four neighborhood committees: Beidajie, Xidajie, Dongdajie, and Dunzijie.
