The Wanglang Nature Reserve is a forest and wildlife-type nature reserve primarily dedicated to protecting rare wild animals such as the giant panda, Sichuan golden monkey, and takin, as well as their habitats. The reserve is located in Pingwu County, Mianyang City, Sichuan Province, covering a total area of 322.97 square kilometers.

Established in 1965, the Wanglang National Nature Reserve is one of the first four nature reserves in China built to protect rare wild animals such as the giant panda and their habitats. Situated in the Himalaya-Hengduan Mountains, a core global biodiversity region, it maintains an intact natural ecosystem known worldwide for its primitiveness, diversity, rarity, and representativeness. The area boasts rich biodiversity, with seven species of Class I nationally protected animals including the giant panda, golden monkey, and takin. This region serves as a crucial corridor for giant panda habitats and a hub connecting the Minshan panda populations. The plant composition is complex and ancient, with many species serving as medicinal herbs, ornamental flowers, and forest vegetables. The virgin forests in the Wanglang Reserve are among the best-preserved in northwestern Sichuan, featuring towering fir, spruce, and redwood trees reaching toward the sky. The area offers scenic views in all seasons—crisp air, streams, and distinct vertical vegetation zones create a memorable experience. Summers are cool with an average temperature of 12.7°C, making it a great destination for escaping the heat, viewing flowers, and sampling forest vegetables. In autumn, the mountains are ablaze with red foliage, creating a breathtaking landscape. Winters offer opportunities for snow viewing and wildlife spotting. Surrounding Wanglang also lives an ancient and unique ethnic group—the Baima people—who have a language, customs, and historical culture distinct from any other group, preserving primitive and traditional cultural heritage. Together with Wanglang’s natural scenery, they form a uniquely distinctive eco-tourism destination.

The tourism projects in Sichuan’s Wanglang National Nature Reserve receive assistance from the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) in terms of funding, technology, and expertise. It is a true eco-tourism destination aimed at conservation and operates on a reservation system. Eco-tourism infrastructure is now partially established, with a reception capacity for 50 people. Tourism products and routes have been developed, and efforts are underway to obtain certification from international eco-tourism organizations, aiming to become the first internationally certified eco-tourism site in China.

Currently available eco-tourism activities include morning birdwatching, traversing virgin forests, strolling through giant panda habitats, flower-watching trails, mushroom identification trails, hiking, camping, evening lectures, and more. The site can also host general meetings, training sessions, youth summer camps, and student internships.
