The Snow Mountain Peak Nature Reserve was established in 1993, covering a total area of 63,615 hectares. The reserve consists entirely of pristine forested areas and is uninhabited. Located within one of the world’s biodiversity hotspots—the mountainous region of southwestern China—it lies at the heart of the Minshan Mountain Range, a core habitat for the giant panda. The area has a high density of giant panda populations and an exceptionally well-preserved ecological environment. It boasts abundant flora and fauna resources, with giant pandas—its primary conservation target—having both a high distribution density and large population numbers. The panda habitats here are well-conserved and expansive. Due to its unique geographical location, the reserve has been less affected by Quaternary glaciers. It also serves as an ecotone where species from the Palaearctic and Indomalayan realms intersect. To its north lies the Huanglong Nature Reserve, to the west the Baiyang Nature Reserve, and to the south the Piankou Nature Reserve. It forms an absolutely vital link in the giant panda corridor of the Minshan Mountain Range. Owing to its exceptional rarity and typical natural ecosystems, the reserve has been included in the “China Biodiversity Conservation Action Plan” as a forest ecosystem reserve prioritized for protection, and is ranked as Grade “A” in the “China Biodiversity Conservation Review,” designating it as a reserve of global significance. The area features towering snow-capped peaks, encircling high mountains, rapid rivers, deep canyons, dense primeval forests, vast natural grasslands, and numerous waterfalls and springs. Rare birds and animals are frequently spotted, presenting a landscape that is raw, majestic, ruggedly beautiful, and awe-inspiring. This complements and contrasts wonderfully with the fresh, delicate, and exquisitely charming scenery of Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong, together forming a perfectly harmonious world-class scenic area.

Snow Mountain Peak is the main peak of the Minshan Mountain Range, with an elevation of 5,588 meters. It is located in the northwest corner of Pingwu County, serving as the boundary mountain between Pingwu and Songpan counties, and is also regarded as a sacred mountain by the local Tibetan community. At its base lie the Wanglang, Huya, and Sier Nature Reserves. The Minjiang and Fujiang Rivers both originate here. It is the mother of all mountains and the source of many rivers.

It is also a concentrated showcase of renowned natural landscapes and ethnic culture. Snow Mountain Peak is also known as Baoding Mountain, Kongtong Mountain, Xuelan Mountain, Snow Mountain,

and Snow Ridge, among other names. The area surrounding Snow Mountain Peak is home to many world-class scenic spots. To the east at its base lies the “Fairyland on Earth”—Huanglong Temple; to the north is the “Fairy Tale World”—Jiuzhaigou; to the northwest are the “Panda Paradise”—Wanglang Nature Reserve and the Baima Tibetan area; and to the south are the Huya and Sier Nature Reserves. With its towering peaks and overlapping ridges, snow-dusted pine-covered summits remain silver-white even in June. Snow Mountain Peak is one of the most famous mountains in Mianyang.
