Wang Youmu Memorial Hall

The Wang Youmu Memorial Hall is located beneath the Tuan Shan Bridge in Wudu Town, Mianyang City, Sichuan Province, situated to the east of Wudu Town on the western bank of the Fujiang River, facing the renowned Sichuan mountain Douchui Mountain across the river. It is a memorial hall built to commemorate Wang Youmu, one of the earliest promoters of Marxism in Sichuan and one of the founders and leaders of the early Sichuan Party and League organizations.

The Wang Youmu Memorial Hall was first established in November 1987 and opened to the public in June 1991. Covering an area of over 5,500 square meters, it features ancient-style architecture and includes a memorial hall, exhibition rooms, a double-eaved hexagonal pavilion, a water bamboo house, and an osmanthus garden. The memorial hall was initially named Jiangyou City Wang Youmu Memorial Hall and was under the administration of the Jiangyou City Construction Committee (later the Jiangyou City Construction Bureau). In December 2005, the Wang Youmu Memorial Hall was handed over to the Wudu Town People’s Government. In 2006, to strengthen the management of both the Wang Youmu Memorial Hall and his former residence, the Wang Youmu Memorial Park was established, incorporating both sites.

Memorial Hall

The main exhibits in the memorial hall include: a 3-meter-tall marble statue of martyr Wang Youmu; handwritten letters by Wang Youmu addressed to Yun Daiying and Cun Chengtong; reports from the Chengdu Local Executive Committee of the Communist Youth League to the Central Committee; materials on the activities of the Sichuan Party organizations. Letters dated May 5 and May 18, 1923, sent to the Central Party Committee proposing “arming the workers and peasants” and plans for armed struggle. The newspaper “Human Voice” founded by Wang Youmu and related documents; memoirs by veterans who worked with the martyr Wang Youmu; research materials, articles, and books about Wang Youmu from provincial and municipal Party history departments. Inscriptions, couplets, and a famous inscription by renowned writer Sha Ting donated by central, provincial, and municipal leaders such as Yang Chengwu, Zhang Aiping, Chen Yeping, Zeng Delin, Wang Huai’an, Han Tianshi, He Jingzhi, Zheng Bok, Zhang Liqun, Zheng Keyang, and Wu Xue.

Exhibition Room

The exhibition room contains: a chronological overview of Wang Youmu’s life; an introduction to his revolutionary exploration and activities during his youth; the lecture notes he read while engaging with Marxist theory and deepening his understanding; the process of organizing the “Marx Reading Club” and founding the “Human Voice” newspaper; the establishment and activities of the Sichuan Socialist Youth League; the creation of the Sichuan Chinese Communist Party organization and the conscientious implementation of Party resolutions, including facilitating the first KMT-CPC cooperation in Sichuan; the development of revolutionary movements in Sichuan (including labor, peasant, and women's movements); the approximate time and place of his heroic sacrifice for the revolution; and the “Certificate of Glory” personally signed by Chairman Mao Zedong on September 18, 1952, issued for the family of martyr Wang Youmu, among other items.

Garden

The memorial hall’s scenic spots are elegant: there is a double-eaved hexagonal pavilion named “Jingxing” (Admiration) and another called “Yangzhi” (Looking Up). A small path leads to the “Water Bamboo House,” where stone plaques featuring a calligraphy couplet and the name “Water Bamboo House” written by Yu Youren, a late veteran statesman of the Kuomintang, are inlaid near a fish pond. The “Water Bamboo House” is a resting area for visitors. The areas around the memorial hall and exhibition rooms include a rose garden, an osmanthus garden, and evergreen surroundings with birdsong, fragrant flowers, and lush pines and cypresses all year round, creating a tranquil environment that serves both as a venue for revolutionary education and a sightseeing destination.

Martyr Wang Youmu (1887–1924), also known as Pi Chang or Sui, was from Wudu Town, Jiangyou County (now Jiangyou City), Sichuan Province. In pursuit of truth, he traveled to Japan. Entrusted by people like - and Li Dazhao, he founded the “Marxist Reading Club” in Chengdu, established the first Socialist Youth League organization and the first Communist Party organization in Sichuan. In 1924, he passed away on his way back to Sichuan after attending a meeting in Guangzhou, making him one of Sichuan’s early revolutionary activists.
