Jiangyou Gong’an Bridge

Gong’an Bridge is a cultural heritage site protected at the municipal level in Jiangyou City.

Gong’an Bridge is located in Chonghua Town, spanning Lingxi River from southeast to northwest. Built during the Qing Dynasty, it was reinforced and renovated with funding from the local government in 1998. The bridge is a three-pier, four-arch stone slab bridge, with a length of 31.5 meters and a width of 7.46 meters. The structure is built from blue stone slabs held together with lime mortar, featuring a reinforced concrete deck and seven steps made of cement on both ends. The piers are adorned with round-carved dragon-shaped bridge brackets, with the dragon heads facing northeast and the tails pointing southwest. A wooden bridgehouse is erected on the bridge deck, featuring a post-and-lintel wooden structure and a tiled roof covered with small green tiles. The bridgehouse has nine bays in total, divided between the central section and side sections, supported by 48 wooden pillars. The central bay is positioned in the middle of the bridgehouse, with four king posts raised to form a second floor, enclosed by wooden skirt panels and capped with a hip-and-gable roof. Folk-style grey-plastered ridge ornaments decorate the roof, with wind chimes at each corner. Side bays have gable-and-hip roofs with similar ridge ornaments, and feature an octagonal entrance at both ends, with bracket sets (dougong) under the eaves. The beams, pillars, and crossbeams of the bridgehouse are all painted with colored designs, and wooden railings are installed at both ends. The bridge remains relatively intact and is one of the few remaining covered bridges (langqiao) in the city, serving as an important physical resource for studying local Qing Dynasty bridge construction techniques, folk customs, and architectural styles.
