Kaizhou Museum

Kaizhou Museum is located on Binhu Middle Road in Kaizhou District, Chongqing (north of the Civic Square). With an investment of over 50 million yuan and covering an area of 18 acres, the project officially commenced construction in July 2011 and opened to the public in January 2013.

The museum’s basic exhibition, “Splendid Kaizhou,” was rated among the top ten outstanding exhibitions in Chongqing, while the special exhibition “Trendsetters of Kaizhou” won the Best Creativity Award in Chongqing for 2014.

The total building area is 4,200 square meters, including 500 square meters for storage, 200 square meters for cultural relics conservation technology, 2,000 square meters for exhibition halls, 1,000 square meters for public service areas, and 500 square meters for offices. It is a four-story frame structure with a building height of 18 meters.

The museum currently houses a collection of over 7,000 cultural relics, including 520 classified as national treasures. The collection mainly consists of pottery, porcelain, bronzeware, and shadow puppets, among which bronze weapons, Song Dynasty Longquan celadon, and Qing Dynasty shadow puppets are particularly notable. The exhibition halls are themed “Splendid Kaizhou,” “Essence of the Collection,” “Folk Customs,” and “Trendsetters of Kaizhou,” showcasing the history and culture of Kaizhou from political, economic, social, and humanistic perspectives, and presenting the charm of Kaizhou to the world.

The museum integrates functions of collection, preservation, research, and social education. It shoulders the responsibility of displaying the thousand-year-old civilization of Kaizhou, promoting traditional national culture, popularizing historical and humanistic knowledge, and providing patriotic education, serving as a “window” into the millennia-old heritage of Kaizhou.

In September 2018, it was designated as a National Third-Class Museum.

Kaizhou Museum Square is situated on the central axis between the Kaizhou District People’s Government building, the Municipal Square, and the Civic Square. After exiting the Wanzhou-Kaizhou Expressway, follow Yingbin Avenue straight (passing two roundabouts), then turn right onto Binhu Middle Road and continue for 500 meters.
