Liangping Guanyin Cave is a national AA-level tourist attraction.

The Guanyin Bamboo Sea Municipal Scenic Area is located in the northwest of Liangping District, spanning three towns including the key central town of Pinqi — one of Chongqing’s major urban centers. It lies 36 kilometers from the county seat, with National Highway 318 running through the area and the Chongqing–Wanzhou Expressway passing nearby. The drive to Chongqing and Wanzhou takes approximately 90 minutes and 30 minutes, respectively.

The Guanyin Bamboo Sea Municipal Scenic Area combines bamboo forests, landscapes, and cultural elements, embodying the features of “grandeur, wonder, danger, beauty, serenity, and uniqueness.” It boasts over 200,000 acres of contiguous bamboo groves, featuring 37 bamboo species across an area of 119 square kilometers — making it the largest in western China and the only extensive bamboo sea in the Chongqing reservoir region. It is honored as the “Bamboo Museum.” In 2007, it was awarded the title “Hometown of Longevity Bamboo” by Chongqing Municipality. The scenic area includes more than 50 attractions such as Mingyue Lake, Hundred Bamboo Garden, Guanyin Cave, a Quality Education Base for Rural Primary and Secondary School Students, Tianxing Pond, Zhufeng Tianchi, Little Emei Mountain, the Revolutionary Base of Ma'erzhai, and Fox’s Mouth.

Figures such as Li Guanghua, Wang Weizhou, Kuang Jixun, and Cai Kui led the First Route Army and Third Guerrilla Detachment of the Sichuan Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army in guerrilla combat and underground party activities within the Hundred Mile Bamboo Sea. The area features dense bamboo forests, diverse and majestic peaks, uniquely shaped mountains, wild ducks gliding on lake waters, reflections of emerald bamboo, and a landscape of breathtaking beauty. Natural scenery blends with the “bamboo culture” and cultural attractions scattered throughout the Hundred Mile Valley, forming a heavenly paradise where nature and human elements coexist in harmony, combining strength with grace — a veritable “Peach Blossom Garden” landscape.

The Guanyin Bamboo Sea Municipal Scenic Area is situated in the transitional zone between natural and cultural landscapes in western China, within the economic-tourism belt of the middle and upper reaches of the Yangtze River, the complementary scenic area cluster of Sichuan, Chongqing, Guizhou, and Yunnan, and the moderately developed karst region.

Alongside “Southern Sichuan Bamboo Sea Scenic Area” in Yibin and “Jinfo Mountain Scenic Area” in Nanchuan, it stands as one of the three major bamboo-culture-themed scenic areas in western China. With its sprawling bamboo sea spanning hundreds of miles, the unique terrain of two mountains flanking a valley, and comprehensive landscape resources including mountains, water, forests, caves, waterfalls, and rocks, it holds great development potential.

Guanyin Cave: The scenic area features a small, bustling temple that has a history of over 1,000 years. Legend says it was built by three young warriors fleeing persecution during the late Tang Dynasty. Inside the temple flows a thin stream of sweet, clear water that never dries up all year round. Descending along the stone steps, visitors will find vast bamboo groves and quaint, exquisitely crafted bamboo houses. Within the Black Dragon Pool Gorge, surrounded by steep cliffs, a waterfall over ten zhang (approximately 33 meters) long cascades down from the sky, creating a truly unique and spectacular scene.

Little Emei Mountain: Covered in lush bamboo and trees, Little Emei Mountain stands tall and elegant amid surrounding peaks, exuding tranquility and beauty. Due to its charm, it is referred to as Emei Mountain. The entire mountain resembles a sitting Buddha, strikingly lifelike and vivid. Atop the mountain sits Emei Temple, which enjoys great popularity and thrives with incense offerings. The most famous and mystical sight on Emei Mountain is the “Five Lions Worshiping the Buddha.” In front of the mountain, rolling peaks rise dynamically. Notably, five towering stone peaks stand abruptly from the ground, like five stone lions. The smooth limestone cliffs, free of dust and polished by rainwater, display streaks that resemble lions raising their heads with flowing manes. Further behind the cliffs, the mountain range gradually recedes and lowers, resembling the lions’ bodies and tails. The five lions take on various poses — some appear to be neighing proudly, others charging forward, some gazing upward, and others standing still as if listening intently. All face toward Emei Mountain together, creating a grand and magnificent spectacle known as the “Five Lions Worshiping the Buddha.”
