Chongqing Jindao Gorge is a National AAAA-level Tourist Attraction.

Jindao Gorge is situated at the southwestern foot of the Huaying Mountains in Beibei District, Chongqing Municipality, at an altitude of 880 meters, about 90 kilometers from the city center. It was one of the first “National AAA-level Tourist Areas.” The site is a recently discovered natural gorge area that retains its primeval, ancient, and mystical charm. The landscape is dominated by approximately hundreds of millions of years old canyon gullies, complemented by karst landforms, and also features numerous stunning deep pools known geologically as "pothole jade-bead strings."

Jindao Gorge boasts a majestic terrain, renowned for its perilous gorges, lush forests, spectacular cliffs, and serene waters. The gorge stretches about 9 kilometers and is divided into upper and lower sections. The upper section, shaped by karst geological processes, features dramatic landform cuts, where nature has sculpted unique, deep ravines with sheer cliffs as if carved by divine swords. The cliffs are precipitous, the mountains nearly close at the top, with a vertical height exceeding 100 meters. Ancient vines hang overhead, and clear streams flow below. The lower section, shaped by water erosion, contains a network of caves, interconnected pools, cascading waterfalls, and a variety of karst formations such as stalactites, stalagmites, and stone pillars in all shapes and sizes. Among its highlights is the country’s longest ancient-style plank walkway along a gorge, spanning ten li (approximately 5 kilometers), which inspires awe. Walking along these planks to explore the depths allows you to feel the spiritual essence of nature hidden within the mountains and waters. The developed 7-kilometer scenic route is famed for its grandeur, danger, wonder, and serenity. It combines waterfalls, springs, caves, and gorges, featuring over forty attractions including Sword-Hiding Cave, Mid-Gorge Natural Bathing Beach, Hanging Sky Waterfall, Divine Eagle Gorge, and Maitreya Buddha. These offer visitors opportunities for exploration, climbing, and water recreation. It is an ideal destination for vacationing, summer retreats, spring outings, and reconnecting with nature. Visitors praise it as “Shangri-La in a dream” and “China’s most thrilling gorge.”

Upon entering Jindao Gorge, you will discover its uniquely spectacular scenery. Trees as thick as bowls grow robustly in crevices of massive rocks devoid of soil. Rugged rocks and lush forests blend organically, while tranquil emerald lakes and rushing streams compose a symphony of water. Stalactites of various shapes hang in clusters from the cliffs—this primitive landscape shaped by karst geology gives the area immense value in conservation, scientific research, and sightseeing. Springs of all sizes tumble down moss-covered rocks, sparkling under the sunlight, reminiscent of the poetic line “big and small pearls falling on a jade plate.” As you walk through the gorge, water rushes alongside you. Fleeting sunlight, mists from splashing waterfalls, and bizarrely shaped stone stalactites create a dreamlike world. This romantic journey will leave you lingering, reluctant to leave.

Along the route, you’ll find the “First Archway in Eastern Sichuan,” the Qing Dynasty imperial memorial archway in Tankou honored as a model of filial piety; the vast flower nurseries of Jingguan, known as China’s “Hometown of Flowers and Plants”; the ancient Song Dynasty Pagoda-Ping Temple that harmoniously blends temple and pagoda views; and the ancient town of Pianyan, which exudes classic charm like “withered vines, old trees, crows at dusk, little bridges over flowing streams, and cottages”—together forming a stunning scene where culture and nature shine side by side.
