Nancun Village
Nancun Village is a classic red tourism destination and a patriotic education base.
Nancun Village is one of the historic ancient villages in Ding’an County. During the late Yuan and early Ming dynasties, the main Chen and Wang clans established the settlement, which has a history of 500 to 600 years.
The Wang clan lives in Julushanwei, Paitang, and Julukou; the Chen and Lao clans reside in the Upper Village; the Lower Village is home to the Wang, Chen, Li, and Gu clans; and five households of the Wang, Wu, and Lin clans reside within Julu Mountain in Nancun. It was not until the mid-Qing Dynasty that the area was named "Nancun." The "Nan" (South) in Nancun serves as a reminder for future generations that their ancestors migrated from Nanjiu in Leiming; the "Qu" (Curved) refers to the arc-shaped, winding mountain ranges stretching from south to north, and also symbolizes achieving success through a winding path.
Nancun Village is a village with a history of anti-Japanese resistance. During the nationwide Anti-Japanese War, the united front between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party gradually gained popular support. Feng Baiju, Secretary of the Qiongya Special Committee of the Chinese Communist Party, Commander and Political Commissar of the Anti-Japanese Independent Regiment, led 11 people to stay in Nancun Village for 14 days to carry out anti-Japanese propaganda activities, greatly inspiring the villagers’ patriotism and sense of justice. At that time, Wang Zhifa, Captain of the First Reserve Guerrilla Battalion of Ding’an County, and Wang Weilu, a squad leader, along with 25 others, sacrificed their lives for the country. After the victory of the war, the Nationalist Government erected a “Leiming Township Martyrs Monument for Anti-Japanese Heroic Soldiers,” with inscription and summary texts respectively authored by Major General Qiu Yuesong and Lieutenant General Wang Yi of the Nationalist Army as commendation. During the Liberation War, the villagers of Nancun actively raised funds and provisions to support the Qiongya Column and the Crossing-the-Sea Army in liberating Hainan Island.
Since 2005, with the care of various levels of government in Ding’an County and the assistance of the Ding’an County Party History Research Office and the Ding’an County Museum, Nancun Village has been dedicated to uncovering red and historical materials. In April 2012, the former site of General Feng Baiju’s anti-Japanese headquarters was designated as a Ding’an County Cultural Relics Protection Unit. The first residence at this site was restored in 2014 as an “Exhibition House.” With the support of the Ding’an County Government and the villagers of Nancun, the Ding’an County Party History Research Office was responsible for designing eight major sections: Introduction, Historic Nancun, Modern Nancun, Epilogue, Archival Materials, and Art Appreciation. These sections highlight the stories of Nancun people’s loyalty to the Party, tales of anti-Japanese martyrs, ancient history, Republican-era culture, and achievements in socialist construction. This red-themed wall prominently showcases the villagers’ devotion to the Party, the stories of anti-Japanese heroes, and the new look of reform and opening up.
