Mingfeng Valley is the most representative and pristine tropical rainforest valley in Jianfengling. It stretches 2.5 kilometers in length, and it takes about one to two hours to walk around the wooden boardwalk — not too tiring. This valley earned its name because it attracts numerous birds. It boasts unique tropical rainforest landscapes such as “thousand-year-old ancient trees,” “hanging gardens,” “buttress roots,” and “strangler figs,” offering visitors an amazing experience. Upon entering the scenic area and following the well-maintained wooden boardwalk, you’ll initially still see bits of blue sky. But the further you venture in, the thicker and denser the trees become, completely covering the sky and blocking out almost all sunlight. Only the randomly growing branches intertwine overhead, displaying the untamed ruggedness of nature.

In Mingfeng Valley, you can admire the diversity of tropical rainforest plants, breathe in the fresh air rich in negative ions, listen to the pleasant chirping of birds, and witness various flowers, vines, and ferns that make their home on towering ancient trees, forming the so-called “hanging gardens.” You might also see rows of soft vines hanging down to form wide “curtains,” or climb into the hollow trunks of “buttress root trees” to gaze up at the sky. A trip to Mingfeng Valley will surely offer you an intimate encounter with the rainforest.

Best Time to Visit:

The best time to visit is from November to April of the following year. If you come during the rainy season from May to October, be sure to check the local weather forecast in advance, as heavy rain can make the roads slippery.

Transportation Guide:

By Bus:

Take a provincial express bus from Haikou West Bus Station to 【Jianfeng Town】, then rent a local tricycle or private taxi to 【Jianfengling National Forest Park】, and enter the scenic area by renting a vehicle at the park entrance.

Tips:

1. The boardwalk can be slippery, so it is recommended to wear non-slip shoes.

2. During rainy or cloudy weather, leeches are especially common in the mountains. It is advised to wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants to prevent insect bites, and avoid dark-colored clothing. If you find a leech on your body, do not pull it off with your hands — instead, burn it lightly with a cigarette butt and it will fall off.

3. Be sure not to stray off the cement paths or boardwalks in the scenic area, as it is easy to get lost.

4. There is a significant temperature difference between day and night in the mountains, so bring a jacket.

5. If you plan to stay overnight in Jianfengling, try to choose accommodations near Tianchi or Yulin Valley.

6. “Enjoy the scenery, don’t walk; walk, don’t admire the scenery.” The rainforest landscape can be both spectacular and dangerous, so stay aware of your safety even as you take in the views.
