Ancient Sites of Baimajing

The Ancient Sites of Baimajing, a tourist destination in Hainan. Located in Baimajing Town, Danzhou City, the site is over 50 kilometers from Nada Town. The main attractions include the "Baima Spring" and the Temple of General Fubo. Legend has it that during the Han Dynasty, when the heroic General Ma Fubo campaigned southward, his white horse pawed at the sand, causing a clear spring to gush out—hence the name. Later, people built the Fubo Temple and the Fubo Well in memory of this Han Dynasty hero. Thus, the "Baima Spring" and the Temple of General Fubo became a popular tourist destination.

The Ancient Sites of Baimajing were documented as early as the Sui and Tang dynasties. The old records of Baoyi Prefecture state: "Later, General Fubo rode a white horse, pawed the sand, and discovered a spring, which became a well. Since the well was only forty-five steps from the sea waves, its water was fresh and sweet. The locals built the Fubo Temple above the well." It also says: "In the fifth year of the Xiantong era (864 AD) during the reign of Emperor Yizong of the Tang Dynasty, General Xin Chuan and Li Si led their troops through Nan Tan Port. Thirsty, their white horse dashed across the sand and found a spring. Chinese modern literary master, great poet, historian, and archaeologist Guo Moruo wrote the poem 'Port of Baimajing' during his visit and investigation in 1961. In the preface to the poem, he included textual research about the ancient site: 'Near the port, there are traces of a well and a shrine dedicated to General Fubo. Legend says that when General Fubo arrived here, his white horse stomped the ground and a spring gushed out. A well was dug and named 'Baima' (White Horse). This is mere speculative interpretation based on the name. In reality, 'Baima' refers to Fubo itself. In ancient times, there was no light labial sound; 'Fu' was pronounced like 'Bai,' and 'Bo' and 'Ma' sounded similar. From this ancient pronunciation, we can conclude that General Fubo indeed came to Dan’er. It’s just unclear whether it was Lu Fubo or Ma Fubo.' Su Dongpo’s 'Record of Fubo Tun' states: 'The Han Dynasty had two Generals Fubo, both contributing merits to the people of Lingnan. The earlier Fubo was Pi Gao, the Marquis of Lu; the later Fubo was Xin Xi, the Marquis of Ma... Historical accounts passed down through the ages cannot be definitively settled on one version.' Su Dongpo, who lived over nine hundred years ago, already found it difficult to 'settle on one version,' and it is even harder to determine today."

With the development of Yangpu Port and the establishment of the Baimajing Development Zone and the Baimajing Border Trade Market, Baimajing Town has built a number of high-end dining and accommodation facilities, including Baimajing Hotel, Golden Port Grand Hotel, and Kunma Grand Hotel. Program-controlled telephones have been installed, and a 1-kilometer-long commercial street has been constructed. The street features over 200 motorcycle taxis and ferry motorcycles, offering various tourism services to visitors. The number of domestic and international tourists has been increasing steadily.

Baimajing Town: A town under the jurisdiction of Danzhou City. Established as Baimajing Town in 1957, it was later changed to a commune and reinstated as a town in 1981. Located in the northwest of the city, it is 60 kilometers from the municipal government. Covering an area of 22.8 square kilometers with a population of 21,000, it serves as the starting and ending point of the Na (Da)–Bai (Majing) Highway. Baimajing Port functions as a cargo import and export port.
