Danzhou Guanyin Cave

Guanyin Cave is a large limestone karst cave located on Lotus Peak in Danzhou City, Hainan Province. Due to its grand scale and magical scenery, it is said in ancient times that the Goddess of Mercy (Guanyin) once resided here, hence the name.

The Guanyin Cave on Lotus Peak is surrounded by lush ancient trees, with colorful mountain flowers blooming all year round, and offers a relatively spacious surface area. There are three cave entrances in total, approximately 60 meters apart. The cave is expansive, stretching 500 meters in length, over 6 meters in width, and up to 10 meters in height. It is divided into three levels, with the middle level being the largest. Inside, there is a main hall that is 15 meters long, 6 meters wide, and 10 meters high, with uniquely patterned grooves and textures on the inner rock walls.

The three levels of the cave are interconnected, with winding passages that are quiet and serene. The cave floor is flat, making it easy to walk through. The interior of Guanyin Cave remains cool in summer and warm in winter, with excellent ventilation. There are dozens of uniquely shaped and fascinating formations, offering scenic views at every step and wonder at every turn. There is also a small hot spring eye in the cave that drips water year-round; locals say it is sweet, longevity-bestowing water left behind by the Goddess of Mercy for future generations. A hidden skylight on the cave ceiling lets sunlight stream in, creating a marvelous connection between the cave and the sky.

Within the “palm” of Hezhang Peak lies a natural cave known as “Guanyin Cave.” The cave is 40 meters deep and wide, and about 100 meters high, making it the largest cave in Yandang Mountain. Inside the cave, a ten-story building is built against the cliff face. To reach the highest level’s main hall, visitors must climb 377 stone steps from the cave entrance. The hall enshrines a statue of Guanyin and the Eighteen Arhats. Additionally, the cave features three springs named “Heart-Washing,” “Jade-Washing,” and “Thread of Light.” Scholar Deng Tuo once wrote a poem about it:
