Zhonghe Ancient Town

In ancient times, Zhonghe Ancient Town was the administrative center of Danzhou. The great Song Dynasty literary master Su Dongpo once lived here in exile for three years. Due to Su Dongpo’s influence on the local culture, people here have loved composing poetry and matching couplets for centuries, earning Zhonghe the reputation as the “Hometown of Poetry and Couplets.”

The main attractions in town are its historic sites. In addition to the famous Dongpo Academy, there are also other sites such as the Kuanglang Hermitage, Dongpo Well, and Kuixing Pagoda. Moreover, the ancient city walls built during the Song Dynasty still preserve two of their original gates—the west and north gates—showcasing the grand scale of the time. Additionally, strolling along the main streets of Zhonghe Town (a round trip takes about 30 minutes) offers a glimpse into its quaint charm.
