Wanquan River

The Wanquan River is a symbol of Hainan Island. With its pure, crystal-clear waters that resemble a jade ribbon, it flows down from the peaks of the Wuzhi Mountains and empties into the sea at Bo’ao, Qionghai City. The riverbanks boast breathtaking typical tropical rainforest landscapes and marvelously shaped landforms. According to experts, the Wanquan River is an unpolluted tropical river in China with a superior ecological environment, and is hailed as China’s “Oxygen Valley.”

The Wanquan River flows through Qionghai City for 81 kilometers. Along its course, it forms a midstream sandbar island, and nearby are the famous Guantang Hot Springs and the picturesque Baishi Ridge Scenic Area.

The river mouth at Bo’ao is the most scenic part of the Wanquan River. This area combines river, green islands, harbors, and sandbars, and is considered one of the best-preserved natural river estuaries in the world. The Wanquan River, along with the Longgun River and the Jiuqu River, converge here. Scenic spots such as Dongyu Island, Shapo Island, Mandarin Duck Island, Bo’ao Port, Tanmen Port, and Shenggong Rock are also located in this area. The Wanquan River rafting trip, from Yanyuan to Huishan Township, covers about 15 kilometers and takes approximately three hours. The narrowest point of the river is about 8 meters wide, while the widest stretches up to about 100 meters, with water depths ranging from 1 to 10 meters. Drifting down the Wanquan River in a rubber raft, you’ll encounter rapids and waterfalls of varying intensity, uniquely shaped peaks and rocks, cascading waterfalls like silver rivers, and Miao ethnic villages nestled among coconut and bamboo groves. There’s the thrill of rushing through rapids and navigating dangerous shoals, as well as the poetic tranquility of leisurely taking in the beautiful scenery along the riverbanks.

Within Qionghai City, the southern branch, the Ledui Water, serves as the main stream, originating from Nanling Village south of the Wuzhi Mountains. The northern branch, the Ding’an Water, originates from the southern part of the Limu Mountain Range. The two streams converge at Hekouzui in Qionghai City and are then collectively called the Wanquan River. It flows through Jiaji and into the South China Sea at Bo’ao.
