Bo’ao Zen Temple, where the Seven Treasures Lotus Pond is not to be missed. It features a variety of lotus species, including the Ohga Lotus, Wufeili Lotus, China-Japan Friendship Lotus, Dongpo Lotus, Hairui Lotus, and Hangzhou Manyuanxiang Lotus. Among them, the most precious is the Ohga Lotus, which was once sent to Japan but returned to its homeland. Legend has it that about two thousand years ago, a Chinese ship sank in Japan, and in 1953, the ancient vessel was discovered seven meters underground at the farm of the Ministry of Health and Welfare at the University of Tokyo in Chiba Prefecture, Japan. Three lotus seeds were found on this ancient ship. Through the meticulous cultivation by the renowned botanist Dr. Ichiro Ohga, one of the seeds sprouted new leaves the following year. This miracle of life was named the “Ohga Lotus.” Observing the Ohga Lotus, which possesses a vitality spanning millennia, along with the diverse and graceful forms of the lotuses, one can sense the deep-rooted history of friendship between the people of China and Japan, two nations separated only by a narrow strip of water.
