Sacred Rock is a massive, dark-colored reef that stands several meters above sea level in the open waters of Bo’ao Port. The most spectacular sight at Sacred Rock occurs after heavy rain. During this time, mountain torrents rush down, causing the water levels of the Wanquan River, Longgun River, and Jiuqu River to surge simultaneously, merging into a fierce and powerful flood that surges toward Bo’ao Port. Meanwhile, the undaunted sea also rises with tremendous force, sending colossal waves to crash head-on against the flood. The two mighty forces collide violently against Sacred Rock, roaring and thundering. Yet, Sacred Rock remains fearless in the face of this dual assault, standing proudly and unyieldingly, shattering the floods and waves again and again. The helpless waters can only swirl and wail around it...

Sacred Rock also boasts rich cultural and historical significance. A literati who visited the mouth of the Wanquan River was so moved by the rock’s composed and majestic presence amid the raging waves that he penned a clever couplet linking another scenic spot in the Wanquan River — “Lotus Pile” — with Sacred Rock. The upper line reads: “Lotus Pile, where Guanyin lectures and fish listen in.” The lower line reads: “Sacred Rock, where Confucius discusses the Way and waves laugh in awe.” The two scenes are perfectly juxtaposed in the couplet, with subtle humor embedded, and the tale has been passed down as a classic anecdote to this day.
