The Founding Venue of the Boao Forum for Asia

The iconic building of Boao Water City is the Founding Venue of the Boao Forum for Asia. The structure features a 3,000-square-meter membrane architecture that resembles a massive conical tent from afar, standing tall in pure white. Located in the heart of Boao, it faces the South China Sea to the east, boasts fresh air, and enjoys convenient transportation. Although the permanent venue of the Boao Forum for Asia has been relocated to Dongyu Island, this site—home to the forum’s original membrane-structure main hall—still attracts thousands of visitors and hosts many large-scale domestic business conferences.

The membrane material of the Founding Venue’s structure was imported from France and airlifted directly to Hainan to meet tight deadlines. Designed to cleverly integrate with the terrain, it is supported by steel pillars along the Wanquan River, forming an open, sail-like architectural form symbolizing Asia’s economic voyage toward the world. This design aligns with international architectural concepts while exuding a strong tropical flair. Originally slated for a normal construction period of three to four months, the builders completed it in just over a third of that time, achieving the remarkable “Boao Speed.” The project was later recognized as a high-quality “model project” in Hainan Province.
