The Ancient City of Lehui

The Ancient City of Lehui was once the seat of the ancient Lehui County government, hence the name Lehui. Established in the fourth year of the Yuandade era, it has a history of over 700 years. Located downstream of the Wanquan River and upstream of Boao Water City, it is about ten kilometers from Jiaji City in Qionghai. This 3-square-kilometer fishing village is surrounded by water on all sides. Today, the ancient city of Lehui has become a village on the island—Lecheng Village—where a complete tropical plant community is preserved. The entire village is nestled among lush coconut trees, papayas, palms, bananas, and other tropical plants, while remnants of history can be faintly seen scattered throughout the settlement.

The continuously incensed Chenghuang Temple in the village, the crisscrossing ancient bluestone-paved roads, the proudly standing pillars of the old county yamen, and the ancient city walls still tell stories of the glorious history that once took place here. Although there are not many remnants of the ancient city, visitors who enjoy exploring historical sites can always sense the prosperity and vibrancy of the ancient city of Lehui during their island travels.

Even if you have no interest in history, the nearly perfect ecological environment, the intricate network of tropical farmland, the readily available tropical fruits, the well-scattered traditional houses, the simple and peaceful local customs, the crystal-clear waters of the Wanquan River, and the graceful coconut and betel nut trees are more than enough to leave every visitor to Lecheng Island with unforgettable memories.
