At the mouth of the Wanquan River on the eastern coast of Hainan Island, there are two small islands that sit close together, covering an area of about 800 square meters. These two islands are called Mandarin Duck Island because they come together at low tide and separate at high tide.

Mandarin Duck Island is located at the port of Bo’ao. Every year during the fifth and sixth lunar months, hundreds of fishing boats from nearby areas such as Lingshui, Sanya, and Lingao within the island region, as well as from outside areas like Dianbai and Yangjiang, gather on the sea to fish. The Bo’ao port is full of hidden reefs, with only a navigable channel about seven to eight meters wide facing Mandarin Duck Island. Therefore, when fishing boats enter or leave the port, their bows and sterns must align in a straight line with Mandarin Duck Island to ensure safe passage. For thousands of years, Mandarin Duck Island has served as a navigational landmark for generations of fishing boats leaving the harbor. In the early 1970s, the Hainan Navigation Mark Management Station built two tall lighthouses on the island, which have since become guiding lights for fishermen entering and exiting the port day and night.
