Hongchaojiang Water Conservancy Scenic Area

Hongchaojiang Water Conservancy Scenic Area is a national water conservancy scenic area.

The Hongchaojiang Reservoir in Beihai City is situated on the shores of the Beibu Gulf in southern Guangxi, 23 kilometers from Hepu County. It can be directly reached via the Guihai Expressway and the Xingdao Lake Secondary Road. This large (Type II) multi-functional, comprehensive reservoir serves purposes such as flood control, irrigation, power generation, tourism, and aquaculture. In 2000, it was designated by the Ministry of Water Resources as a national pilot site for comprehensive reform of large-scale irrigation districts, and in 2002, it was officially recognized by the Ministry of Water Resources as a “National Water Conservancy Scenic Area.”

The reservoir is built in a hilly area, with 1,026 islands of varying shapes scattered across its surface, earning it the nickname “Star Island Lake.” In 1995, it was chosen by China Central Television as the outdoor filming location for the TV series “Water Margin.” The area is divided into eastern and western scenic zones. The eastern zone features Liangshan Water Village, Three Passes, Watchtower, Loyalty Hall, Rear Village, Manjusri Temple, and Golden Severance Pavilion; the western zone includes Yongjin Gate, Six Harmonies Pagoda, Stone Arch Bridge, and Suzhou-Hangzhou Water Street. The scenic area offers comprehensive facilities for travel, sightseeing, accommodation, dining, shopping, and entertainment, and has been approved by the Guangxi Regional Government as an “Autonomous Region-Level Tourist Resort.”
