Yulin Bobai Green Pearl Well

Introduction 　

　 Situated 28 kilometers northwest of Bobai County in Lüluo Village, Shuangfeng Township, this is where the renowned beauty Green Pearl of the Jin Dynasty was born. After she died by throwing herself from a building, the villagers, in remembrance of her, named the village well the Green Pearl Well. It is said that girls who drink water from this well grow up to be very beautiful. In the 47th year of the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty (1708 AD), Magistrate Cheng Lian built a shrine beside the well to honor her. The well has since been lost, but the shrine still remains.

Green Pearl (？-300), surname Liang, was from Lüluo Hamlet, Pingshan Village, Shuangfeng Township, Bobai County. She was intelligent, graceful, beautiful, and talented in singing, dancing, and poetry, especially excelling in performing the “Annoyed Melody” and the “Zhaojun Dance.” During the Taikang era of the Western Jin Dynasty, when Shi Chong served as the Inspector of Jiaozhi, he passed through Bobai and was captivated by Green Pearl’s beauty. He then offered three dou of pearls to take her as his concubine and brought her back to the Golden Valley Garden in Luoyang. When Zhao Wang Sima Lun seized power, his henchman Sun Xiu, having heard of Green Pearl’s breathtaking beauty, demanded her from Shi Chong, but was refused. Later, Sun Xiu arrested Shi Chong and attempted to forcibly take Green Pearl, leading her to leap to her death from a building. The villagers mourned her tragic end and, in memory of her kind and innocent nature, built a shrine in her honor.
