Shrimp Spring

Introduction Located on the north bank of the You River, about 120 kilometers northwest of Nanning City in Guangxi, at the foot of Xishan Mountain west of Pingguo County, there is a spring outlet very close to the riverbank. Clear, pristine spring water flows into the You River. Every year during the lunar months of March and April, late at night, dense swarms of shrimp gather in the shallow pools above the confluence of the You River and the spring water, eagerly swimming upstream. The shrimp washed down by the spring water will repeatedly charge forward, bravely pressing on. Those that make it up to the spring outlet then swim leisurely into the depths of the spring as victors, never to be seen again. The shrimp here have a unique habit of being "born in the river and raised in the spring"—the You River is their "hometown," while Shrimp Spring serves as their "villa." Local villagers place shrimp traps at the spring outlet during the appropriate seasonal nights, and after just two or three hours of "waiting by the trap for shrimp," they can effortlessly harvest over ten kilograms of “catch.”
