Introduction

The Ancient Undersea Labyrinth is located on Qingshan Ridge in Shalan Village, about 4 kilometers from Laibin County Town, covering an area of over twenty acres. According to relevant experts, the rocks in the labyrinth were formed around 350–400 million years ago during the Devonian period, through changes in the ocean floor crust and prolonged erosion by seawater, belonging to a karst erosion structural landform. Ancient marine fossils are scattered all around and can be easily found. The labyrinth is composed of hundreds of rocks, some weighing several tons. Inside, there are numerous stone chambers, stone wells, and stone gates scattered across the area, with crisscrossing stone passages that twist and turn. The walkable paths are wide enough for two people to walk side by side in some places, while in narrower sections, one must turn sideways or even crouch to pass through. The maze-like, winding layout resembles a Bagua formation, and without a guide or signposts, it’s very easy to lose your way — hence the name “Ancient Undersea Labyrinth.” The labyrinth is intertwined with dense shrubs and wild vines hanging from above, casting deep shade over the pathways. Vines twine around trees, trees lean against rocks, and rocks connect with vines, creating a series of whimsical and fascinating scenes. Even more uniquely, the entire labyrinth resembles a fortress, but is extremely well-hidden due to the thick cover of shrubs and vines. During the Anti-Japanese War, it served as a shelter, making significant contributions to protecting the villagers of Shalan Village. The surroundings of the Ancient Undersea Labyrinth are filled with fruit tree orchards consisting of peach, plum, pear, persimmon, and bamboo. When the peach blossoms are in full bloom or the fruits are ripe, people gather in groups — either to enjoy the shade under the trees, have picnics or barbecues, play cards at the stone tables, take scenic photos, or gently sway in hammocks — offering a uniquely delightful experience.
